I describe myself as a helper. Since I can remember, I find joy in helping others reach their goals and making their lives a little easier in the process. At Franklin High School in south Seattle, I worked backstage on plays and musicals to support the actors and the show. Throughout high school and college, I worked at Camp Sealth on Vashon Island in a variety of support roles to ensure campers had a good time and counselors could do their best work. As a teacher, I took on leadership responsibilities to help my colleagues in any way I could.
When I attended the labor of one of my best friends and saw how powerful the birth experience is, it made so much sense that I would work toward becoming a support person for those going through birth. I didn’t really know what I doula was when I first started down this road, but now I can’t imagine putting energy into anything else. The idea that I am able to help make a birthing person’s experience a positive one inspires me every day.
I call myself a “family doula” because along with the birthing person, I do my best to make the birth experience about strengthening the bond and relationship of the entire family unit. I have worked with many partners as well as parents, grandparents, siblings, other children, and chosen families.
Before I became a doula…
I was a high school and middle school Language Arts teacher for 10+ years in Tukwila, Highline, and Kent. Working with middle schoolers prepares you for all kinds of personalities and unexpected situations. I currently still work in a middle school as an instructional coach where I help teachers set goals and improve their craft.
