I became a Doula in 2018 after a nurse friend of mine mentioned that I would be a perfect fit. At that time, I had never even heard of a "Doula", and naturally assumed it was like a Midwife. I went home that evening and researched all that I could find, and I very easily KNEW that this would be the next move in my journey. Since graduating high school, I had been working in various different medical offices, doing many different roles, but none had ever been as interesting to me as when I worked in OB/GYN. Something about the atmosphere and the finite details that are involved in making, growing, and birthing a baby, has always had me enthralled.
I gave birth for the first time when I was just 17, and for the fourth time at 23 years old. My babies are just about back-to-back at 2 years apart from each other. I actually thought for a long time that I would go on to have one more, but life had other plans for me. I remarried in 2017, and my husband brought with him twin boys, so we decided that 6 would be enough for us.
I gave birth to all four of my babies in a hospital, and lucky enough, all by the same OB. Each of my deliveries were very different, and each has their own unique story. I experienced a medicated birth for my first, and the other three were non-medicated. One of them even being delivered "sunny-side up" naturally. I don't take for granted the power behind what our bodies can do.
I have supported several families since becoming a Doula, and have experienced a vast array of different types of births. I have supported: medicated births, un-medicated births, planned cesareans, breech presentation, posterior positioning, placenta previa, IVF pregnancy, VBAC delivery, and inductions.
Before I became a Doula, I…
